Historic Environment Records or HERs are a record of all known archaeology in a County or Local Authority. You may also still hear these records called the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR).

These are your first port of call when trying to find out what archaeological activity has gone on in a particular area. When searching o line you should also try the Archaeology Data Service catalogue aclled ArcSearch.

Our local HERs are:

York City Council. York City Council HER is now searchable through the Heritage Gateway maintained by English Heritage.

North Yorkshire County Council. North Yorkshire County Council HER is also now searchable through the Heritage Gateway maintained by English Heritage.

East Riding of Yorkshire County Council. The HER for the East Riding is administered by the Humber Archaeology Partnership. This HER is not yet searchable through the Hertage Gateway.
