Saturday 22 August Greater York Community Archaeology Project study day: Late Medieval Castles.

Tuesday 25th August

All Saints’ Church, Long Marston will be open to visitors as part of: York’s English Civil War Festival.

On Tuesday 25th August 2009 it is hoped that Members of the Sealed Knot will display a ‘living camp’ and additional artefacts will be on view.

Both openings from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm

The theme for the exhibition for these openings will be “THE BATTLE OF MARSTON MOOR:  2nd JULY 1644”

Documents available to study will include:

  • extensive archive information on both the Church and Parish
  • all the Parish census records from 1841 to 1901
  • the 1910 Land Valuation Valuer’s Field Books for Angram, Hutton Wandesley and Long Marston
  • a selection of Parish registers and related documents.

Thursday 10 and Friday 11 September St Wilfrid 1300th Anniverary Conference.

To be held at St William's College. Historians, art historians and archaeologists will discuss the life and legacy of Wilfrid, Bishop of York and Abbot of Ripon and Hexham. Speakers will include: Prof Richard Bailey, Paul Bidwell, Eric Cambridge, Prof Thomas Charles-Edwards, Dr Katy Cubitt, Dr Richard Hall, Prof Eamonn O Carragain, Prof Alan Thaker and Prof Ian Wood. Saturday 10 October 2009 Annual Archaeology and History Fair, The Guildhall, York

A chance to find out about archaeology in and around York, with displays from local societies and community groups. Specialist booksellers will present a range of new and second-hand books with plenty of bargains. Free admission

Sunday 11 October 2009  –  9.45 am to 4.30 pm A day meeting to mark Terry Manby’s contribution to Yorkshire prehistoric studies.

Organised and supported by: North York Moors National Park Authority and Yorkshire Archaeological Society. Helmsley Arts Centre, Helmsley

Speakers include: Ollie Cooper The Cayton Barrow; Chris Fenton-Thomas  Neolithic Houses at Sewerby Cottage Farm, Bridlington; Duncan Hale Catterick and Scorton ritual complex; Gill Hey  Ferry Fryston and neighbouring Beaker burials; Jim Innes Neolithic and Bronze Age impacts on the environment: new evidence;

Brendan O’Connor Two unusual Late Bronze Age finds from County Durham; Jane Richardson Stanbury and Dewsbury burial assemblages; Alison Sheridan  New insights into the use of jet and jet-like materials; Blaise Vyner Fylingdales, the fire and after. 

Tea and coffee at registration, mid-morning and mid-afternoon are included in the cost.

Saturday 7 November New research into the history of Yorkshire.

A local history day sponsored by the British Association of Local History, and the University of Hull, at the Royal Hotel, Ferensway, Hull, 9.30 - 5.30. This event will showcase new work being undertaken on the history of Yorkshire. Papers range from the late medieval to the 20th century and are from different parts of Yorkshire. Has a number of research sections that run talks and conferences.

Bedale Archaeology and History Society
