Clements Hall Local History Group

We're a small group of people living locally who share a common interest in the history of our neighbourhood in York – Scarcroft, Clementhorpe and South Bank. We've already started finding out about some topics, for example:

In 2016 we’re starting a regular programme of history talks at Clements Hall:

22 January 2016   7.30 pm     From Gimcrack to Frankel: a Gallop through the History of York Racecourse     James Brennan (York Racecourse)

5 February 2016  7.30pm     Early Victorian Railway Excursions: ‘The Million Go Forth’   Susan Major

18 March 2016  7.30 pm     Historic Pubs : A Conservation Issue Pioneered in York    Dave Gamston (author Yorkshire’s Real Heritage Pubs)

6 May 2016  7.30 pm          Zepp attacks York: Centenary of the First Aerial Attack    Dick Hunter and others

1 July 2016  7.30 pm       From Roman Colonia to Conservation Area: a walk around Bishophill    Alison Sinclair

30 September 2016   7.30 pm     ‘That Vile Train': Ambulance Trains in World War 1    Alison Kay (National Railway Museum)

25 November 2016  7.30 pm  A Dickensian Performance: Richard Chicken of York, the real Wilkins Macawber    Brian Oxberry (Charles Dickens (Malton) Society)

You can become a member of the History Group for a small sum of £5 for the year, which gives you reduced entry (£1) to talks. Non‑members are also welcome, at a cost of £3 on the door (this covers our costs for the hall hire and refreshments).

All meetings will take place at Clements Hall in Nunthorpe Road, starting at 7.30pm (the summer historical walk will start from the Hall). All are welcome.

There are a small number of free parking spaces near Clements Hall. It is also easily accessible by buses stopping in Blossom Street (walk along Moss Street opposite the Reel Cinema). Contact us via Clements Hall on 01904 466086 or email enquiries@clementshall.org.uk.
